Inspiration

My paintings are deeply connected to dreams, memory, and emotion. Sometimes an idea comes from a vivid dream. At other times, it appears while I am completely awake. My thoughts can suddenly leave the present and enter a place that has never existed. I think of these wandering moments as another kind of dreaming, like a little night light glowing quietly during the day.

When I work from a dream or memory, I try to return to the emotion I felt at that moment. I hold onto it throughout the painting process and intensify it until I can feel my heartbeat pounding. I believe those emotions remain inside the finished work as traces of the experience that created it.

I am also interested in the relationship between personal experience and collective memory. An image may come from my own subconscious, yet the feeling behind it can still be familiar to someone else. When I develop an idea, I often think about what another person might find within it. I want to stay true to my own inner world while creating space for viewers to recognize something from their own lives.

The more deeply I commit to painting emotion, the more certain I feel that I am on the path I want to follow. Sometimes I feel like countless hands are pushing me forward. I want to keep following that feeling and see where it takes my work next.
